Emerson,

After years of secret negotiations, U.S. Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) officials have decided to appoint a “Chief Transparency Officer.” 1

So who did they pick? One of their own lawyers, Tim Reif. Not exactly encouraging.

This appointment is years late, but with the TPP stalled and public pressure mounting, they’ll try anything to take the bad look off of their secret negotiations. But the latest leaked texts still show that TPP provisions will grievously hurt the Internet and our right to free expression.2

We need to respond ASAP with a new round of pressure to show Mr. Reif we won’t accept phony gestures and to keep the heat on our leaders. Can you chip in $20 to fund a rapid-response transparency campaign before the next TPP round starts?

Lawmakers (who are forbidden from telling us what’s in the TPP) have already criticized this appointment, with one Congressman from Texas saying "If it desired, USTR could grant greater access immediately, without fancy titles." 3

We couldn’t agree more. So let’s prepare a big shiny welcome package for Mr. Reif, courtesy of the Internet.

If you can donate now, we’ll be able to amplify your voices for the text, the whole text, and nothing but the text of this secret deal before negotiators and their cronies meet again at the end of September. 4

We still need your help to shine a light on TPP secrecy and sink its Internet censorship. We’ve beaten things like this before, but it only works when we act together swiftly. Can we count you in, Emerson?

For the Internet,

Meghan, on behalf of your OpenMedia team

P.S. TPP officials have a nasty habit of always saying that a final deal is just around the corner. The fact they’ve had to put a brave face on for so long shows our pressure is working. Support us todayto keep leaders’ feet to the fire.
